Netherlands and into Germany

For many centuries Catholics were not allowed to openly practice their faith in Amsterdam so services were held underground or in attics. It wasn't until 1887 that St Nicholas Basilica was consecrated. It’s interior is now beautifully decorated with red and white marble, gilt ceilings, stained glass and lots of statues of saints.
